A spot in the new house under construction on Summer Drive is the current workshop for Timberon, NMs local woodworker Shirley Holstrom. Soon she will have her own workshop and you can expect to find her there most of her spare time. Shirley uses interesting pieces of materials - wood (both exotic and local), acrylic, and real gun cartridges to create the casing for a one-of-a kind specialty custom item just for you. While Shirley is on her Jet mini-lathe, she is focusing on a small rectangular piece of wood spinning between 500 and 3975 rpm, slowly moving her sharp chisel along the wood, sending tiny chips of Bocote or Cocobolo or some other exotic wood floating into the air and all over the place. Within a few minutes, the piece begins to take shape. She shapes the piece by sight and feel, using no forms, not measuring the width, but listening and watching the piece of wood as it becomes a special piece. She often sands it to 12,000 grit in the finishing process. Working with wood has become an obsession and Shirley's brain is always busy trying to find new ways to use the items she makes or to make something different from the basic design. witnow@dellcity.comPO Box 124Timberon, NM 88350shop.witnowwit.com
